Englands Best Player this Season?
So the season well and truly came to a close, early on Saturday evening with a less than inspiring 2-2 draw with Switzerland at Wembley. From my viewpoint up on level 5 it really did look as if the players were already on their summer hols. They were so slow out of the blocks it wasn’t a surprise to see the first goal fly in from a very well taken Swiss free kick out on the flanks. What was disappointing was to see the subsequent free-kick squirm in from a similar place, albeit at the near post this time.
Two weeks break, plenty of time to relax without loosing too much match fitness but Don Fabio still wheeled out the same old excuses of the players being tired. I’m not usually one to accuse players of not caring [I find it difficult how anyone can walk on the football pitch in front of a sell out crowd at Wembley and not want to perform their best] but I have to say there was a definite lack of desire shown from the team. Ashley Young put in a good performance, Jack Wilshere made a further claim for a starting slot and Stuart Downing looked hungry when he came on. Scott Parker also showed that he is a more than able replacement for Gareth Barry, but what is worrying is the lack of passion for the shirt. I don’t think this is helped by a manager who sets up the team in a 4-1-4-1 formation against the Swiss, at home – it hardly installs belief in the players or the team…
So as another disappointing season draws to a close and the transfer speculation and U21 will be the only football based entertainment for the next few weeks before the hussle & bussle of the Premiership returns I am asking: ‘who has been the best English player over the course of the season?
